Fran Meaney and Phil Dupont, co-founders

Phil Dupont and Fran Meaney read the Cape Cod Chronicle article back in January, 2009 about the proposal for a $1.3 increase in the Chatham Town budget and decided this was crazy for these economically distressed times and decided to do something about it.  Chatham Concerned Taxpayers was the result.  We said our role was to be that of "Paul Revere," sounding the alarm that taxation and spending needed to reined in.

People were awakened to the danger and taxpayers spoke with a loud voice at Town Meeting.  Those voices need to continue to be sounded loud and clear.  There are serious challenges looming.  The battle has been joined, progress has been made, but victory still lies ahead.

The biggest unnecessary expenditure facing the town which town officials are pushing through without a town meeting vote on the full plan is a centralized sewer to reduce nitrogen in Chatham's coastal waters.  This is massive overkill.  The job can be done for far less cost in a way that national environmental organizations and the federal EPA prefer.  There was never a competition to decide the best way.  Town officials decided on a big city sewer and that was that.  Likely costs for taxpayers will be over half a billion dollars when all the bills are finally paid -- 50 years from now.  Town budgets will be burdened for decades with costs that needn't have been incurred.  Unless it is stopped.
